Cottage Wifi

This wiki shares information on installing Wifi at a lake cottage. Why? While a cottage is often a place to disconnect from technology and unwind, stable Wifi is increasingly used by smart devices, security cameras, a electronic entertainment devices.

There are a lot of different lake cottage configurations, and these will be gradually explored.

A professional wifi system is a great fit for cottages. Best of those tested:

For temporary internet, there are some great options:

  • Bring Your Own Phone + GL.iNet GL-AR750S-Ext (Slate) Gigabit Travel AC VPN Router
  • Fixed 4G LTE/5G wireless from your mobile provider
    • Can be a backup internet connection at your home, then take it on the road
  • Avoid the Verizon Jetpack devices for cottage connections, however

Sharing Wifi information with guests

UPDATE Apologies for the delay. I have lots of content planned, but the chip shortage means a lot of components I want to pre-test and write up are currently out of stock. Other projects have my attention at the moment.

The most exciting project is:

  • Ubiquiti Dream Machine SE is sold out so I cannot test it
    • Unifi LTE compatibility
    • NVR for security cameras (Unifi Protect)
    • Access readers (Unifi access)
    • Smart power strip (USP-Strip-US) to automatically power cycle cable modes/internet service devices
    • Captive portal
    • Not going to test, but intriguing: VoIP, Digital Signage, Solar kit

The plan is to write up the build for a secure 19“ rack, complete with NFC and QR code wifi helpers.

Other write-ups:

  • Portable solutions like the GL.iNet GL-AR750S-Ext (Slate) Gigabit Travel AC VPN Router
  • Extending internet to boathouses, outbuildings, and by the pool
  • Captive portals for AirBnb and access for guests when you are away
  • Dealing with power issues
  • Weather proof solutions
